•Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is an oxytocic herb, it stimulates uterine contractions
and is often used around the due date to initiate labour, however it is contraindicated in
pregnancy. Blue cohosh root was traditionally used by the American Indians in late pregnancy to
facilitate childbirth. Blue cohosh has been widely used, with 64% of certified nurse midwives
reporting that they use it to stimulate labour. There have been recent concerns regarding its
safety, making it no longer recommended for use in pregnancy, but to be used only by
experienced practitioners in labour
•Black cohosh (Acetaea racemosa) is as a uterine tonic, traditionally used by the Native
Americans to induce labour. A survey of herbal preparations use of midwives resulted in 45%
stating they used Black cohosh to induce labour and help soften the cervix. It is contraindicated
in pregnancy except for the last weeks to assist with birth
•Motherwort, Raspberry leaf and Ginger assist to promote regular contractions and energise the
uterus
